COMPASSION CORSICANA

is a faith-based nonprofit organization that serves Corsicana Navarro County.
We are completely funded by local grants, trusts, and donations from churches, businesses, and individuals.

OUR MISSION

is to be the hands and feet of Jesus by serving neighbors in need of temporary relief, long-term restoration, and ongoing encouragement. Our goal is to help those facing financial hardships by providing temporary financial relief, food, and transitional housing for women and their children.

OUR HISTORY

Family Service Association, doing business as Compassion Corsicana was formed in 1904 and incorporated as a 501c(3) organization in April 1971. The organization initially provided financial support for utilities, rent, and medications.  The Current organization, operating as Compassion Corsicana is a full service organization with the mission of eliminating poverty. Following a community study in 2008, United Way of Navarro County spearheaded an effort to combine several smaller non-profit organizations to form a “one-stop service center” to assist individuals in need. In 2016, several members of the community joined together to advance this objective out of concern that people in need were required to visit multiple locations to obtain assistance. The original organizing group thought that the various social services agencies would be more effective if they worked together under an umbrella organization. They termed this effort, “Better Together."  By 2018, the planning committee succeeded in combining three agencies under Compassion Corsicana to assist those living in poverty in Navarro County:

  • Family Service Association

  • Navarro County Food Pantry

  • House of Refuge

Today, Compassion Corsicana focuses on identifying and eliminating barriers to self-sufficiency. Services start with our intake process where staff identify needs and provide assistance or referrals to appropriate agencies and services.

WE BELIEVE…

  • in helping people in need by reflecting the heart of Jesus. (Matthew 25:35-40)

  • that providing one central resource with the support of churches and other organizations, is the best way to serve needs of the whole person.

  • that every person regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, gender, or religious affiliation deserves to be cared for with dignity and respect.

  • in providing personal connections to help make a different in each person’s life.

OUR VALUES

PROGRAMS

THE HOUSE OF REFUGE

is a transitional house for women and children who are temporarily displaced. Women who reside at the House have three months to work toward self-sufficiency. Our House Coordinator and Community Specialist meet with the women to ensure the womens and childrens needs are being met. During their stay, women are required to complete community service hours, enroll and participate in community programs, seek employment, apply for housing, and work toward accomplishing personal goals toward self-sufficiency.

SOCIAL SERVICES

provides temporary financial relief by assisting neighbors with utilities, rent, emergency shelter (temporary motel stay), or transportation. Our community specialist works with each neighbor one on one to see what needs we can assist them with, develop a short-term plan to address their need, and if needed assist with developing a long-term plan toward restoration and personal growth.

THE RESOURCE CENTER

provides free new and gently used school approved uniforms. Each year before school starts we purchase new uniforms. Our partner schools provide families in need a Compassion Uniform Voucher. Partner schools include Corsicana ISD, Headstart, Two Dimension Academy, and James L. Collins Catholic school. Each student receives two tops and two bottoms of their choice. We accept uniform donations for new or gently used school approved uniforms, sweaters, and jackets.

FOOD PANTRY

provides food to those in need. We have a great partnership with North Texas Food Bank, DoorDash, and local grocery stores. We provide food boxes and produce boxes biweekly.
